Infrastructure management service definition Infrastructure management service (IMS) is an outsourced business function that manages a company’s IT infrastructure. The purpose of infrastructure management services is to minimize problems with an organization’s IT systems and maximize the efficiency of the technology.

An IMS consists of several service components, including network monitoring and management, system administration, database administration, information security and help desk support. An IMS can perform routine maintenance as well as provide round-the-clock help desk support for server and desktop issues.

Some companies manage their own IT systems – an in-house IT department takes care of hardware and software installation, upgrades, troubleshooting and maintenance. However, many businesses now prefer to outsource at least some of these tasks to third-party providers that specialize in these functions.

The Infrastructure Management Service (IMS) is a computer program that controls, monitors, and manages the z/OS operating system and the resources in the system. It is a complex program that consists of several subsystems. It provides services for communication, data management, job control, and other functions. IMS is made up of two main parts:

The IMS Control Region (CR) — This part controls all IMS operations. It runs under z/OS control in a unique address space called the IMS control region address space. The CR performs such tasks as starting and stopping IMS components, scheduling transactions to the appropriate database managers (DBMs), and initializing databases. It also maintains an internal database called the Process Control Block (PCB) Database, which contains information about each IMS address space in your system.

The IMS Transaction Manager (TM) — This part manages transactions and their access to databases. The TM is made up of one or more address spaces called region address spaces that run under IMS control
